Happy 100th, Time Magazine

Time magazine celebrates a major milestone this month. The inaugural issue came out 100 years ago, on March 3, 1923. It was the first weekly news magazine published in the United States. Time’s offices have always been in New York City.

The first issue was thin, just 32 pages including the cover. Gracing the cover was an illustration of Joseph Cannon, the retired Speaker of the House of Representatives. One thing missing from the cover was color; the distinctive red border was added later. The newsstand price was fifteen cents.

The creators of Time were two Yale-educated journalists, Henry Luce and Briton Hadden. Their goal was to report news in areas ranging from politics to the arts. Some of the coverage would be serious, other aspects fun. Articles in the first issue were about the first helicopter, German reparation payments, and the film Adam’s Rib.

Not many magazines are still going strong after 100 years. Congratulations, Time!
